MPhil Islamic Thought and Civilization

Introduction

There are men and women in Muslim society who wish to gain an in-depth understanding of Islam and intend to write and speak on Islamic issues. At present, there is no platform to help them to learn Islam within a modern framework.

MS/MPhil in Islamic Thought and Civilization at the University of Management and Technology (UMT) is structured to impart world-class education to such people. This program covers the study of Islam in a religious and intellectual tradition as well as the study of Muslim civilization in its various dimensions.
High quality research and advanced courses supported by professional and dedicated faculty, excellent library facilities, and generous financial assistance are the strength of this program.

Aims and Objectives

  1. To open new vistas of instructions and research in Islamic thought and civilization in order to guide the national and international communities to establish institutions based on the eternal principles of Islam in harmony with the spirit of modern times, and to contribute towards the onward march of history.
  2. To conduct and promote studies and research in Islamic thought and civilization involving conceptual analyses, clarifications and elaborations of Islamic key concepts relevant to the cultural, educational, scientific and epistemological problems encountered by Muslims in the present age.
  3. To provide an Islamic response to the intellectual and cultural challenges of the modern world and promote inter-faith and inter-civilization dialogue.

Merits of the MS/MPhil Program

  1. The MS/MPhil program is research-based. The latest research methods and techniques in vogue in the Western world will be introduced to participants so that they are able to conduct effective research, both qualitative and quantitative.
  2. Ways and means are identified to provide participants an opportunity to explore countries of the Muslim world, so that they can write reports on problems and challenges being faced by the Muslim societies and recommend solutions.
  3. In addition to the intellectual and academic resources available locally, foreign Muslim scholars, even non-Muslim scholars are invited to share their knowledge with the participants.
  4. The program aims to help the social sector, corporate sector, and government agencies in the decision-making in an Islamic perspective. This will help to inculcate a true Islamic spirit in the society.
  5. The program addresses real-world issues in an objective and rational manner within an Islamic perspective, avoiding sectarianism or any affiliation with specific religious or political ideologies. The program curriculum reflects impartiality, rationality and views of all schools of thought and is not limited to any single sect, ideology or framework.
  6. The participants are educated and trained to effectively participate in and play an important role in inter-faith and inter-civilization dialogues.

All that is required on the part of the student is the willingness to learn with in open mind, spirit of inquiry, commitment to knowledge, enthusiasm and genuine interest in the subject.

Career Opportunities

The MS/MPhil degree in Islamic Thought and Civilization will widen career options of the students. They will have employment opportunities in public and private sectors, and in research and education at both national and international levels

  1. The world's interest in Islam has increased manifold and consequently most of the Western universities across the globe have introduced courses on the study of Islam. These universities are looking for highly qualified and skilled teachers. The MS/MPhil program is geared to meet this demand.
  2. Research on Islam has also increased in universities, research institutions, print and electronic media, and policy making institutions. The MS/MPhil program prepares researchers to independently undertake research for these institutions in the Islamic perspective.

Admission Criteria

Admission to the program is based entirely on merit. The basic policy of the Admissions Committee of the Department of Islamic Thought and Civilization is to select those men and women whose intellectual capacity, potential and personal characteristics best qualify them to pursue careers in Islamic Thought and Civilization.

Applicants will be assessed on the following criteria:

  • Eligibility

A minimum of sixteen years of education, preferably in first division, resulting in a Master or Bachelor degree in any discipline (social, physical and natural sciences, law, medicine, engineering, languages, religious studies, etc.) from Higher Education Commission (HEC) recognized universities/institutions.

  • Entrance test
  • Interview performance

There are no age, nationality or gender restrictions. The Admission Committee will first review the applications to ensure that candidates meet the above requirements. After preliminary review, the Admission Committee will shortlist the candidates for interviews. The final decision will be taken after the interview.
