FAQs

Q. What subject areas are represented at UMT library?

A.The library’s collection covers a wide range of subjects including Computer Science, Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Business, Physics, Electronics, Telecommunication, Law, Education, English language and literature, ELT, Accounting, Management, Banking, HRM, Organizational behavior, Leadership, Textile Technology, Marketing, Religion Urdu literature. Reputed journals are also provided on the subjects mentioned above.

Q. Where are the journals located? Or Where is the journal's section?

A. Current journals are displayed besides the main entrance of the library. (Daily newspapers are also available there). We however request our users to read the newspapers and journals within the journal section.

Q. Can the journals be checked out?

A. No, Journals are non-circulating material. They are only lent out for photocopy purpose if photocopying facility is not available in the library. If they do leave the library they must be returned immediately after photocopying.

Q. Who can borrow books from the UMT library?

A. You can avail the borrowing facility of the library if you are:

  • Students with valid UMT card
  • Employee of UMT
  • Faculty member
  • Honorary member

Q. How many books can be borrowed from the library and for how long?

Q. How can we find any book? Or How can one find his/her book?

Or how books are arranged on the shelves? A.The arrangement of the books is done according to a classification system called Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). This is one of the most renowned library classification systems being used throughout the world. In this classification, knowledge has been divided into ten classes from 000-999 Classification numbers Used for
000 Generalities (computer science, media and communication etc.)

100 Philosophy and Psychology
200 Religion
300 Social Sciences
400 Language
500 Pure Sciences
600 Applied Sciences/Technology
700 Arts and sports
800 Literature
900 Geography and History

Books are arranged in ascending order from 000—999 on the shelves. Each & above main classes have their subclasses. For example:

600 is used for applied sciences
650 for Management and auxiliary services
658.4 for General Management
658.5 for Executive Management
658.49 for Personal aspects of executive management
658.492 for Leadership

In DDC point (.) is used after the first three digits. However, for each classification numbers at least three digits from 000-999 must be assigned for every book.  

Q. What is the call number?

A. All above mentioned four rows are collectively called “call number”. This is the order of the book on the shelves. You can trace the book through this call number.

Q. Who is allowed to use the UMT Library?

A. The following are eligible to use the UMT library.

  • Students of UMT
  • Employees of UMT
  • Permanent faculty members of UMT
  • Visiting faculty members of UMT
  • Honorary members of the UMT library

Q. What forms of identification can be used to check out materials from the UMT library?

A. Students have to present their valid UMT card, which is non-transferable.Employees have to prove their identification with UMT employee card, duly attested by HR department. Permanent faculty members also have to present their cards certified by the HR Department. For visiting faculty, separate library card will be issued for one trimester, which must be returned after trimester to the issuing authority. Honorary members will be given a membership card for a specified period, which must be returned or renewed after the mentioned date.

Q. Is there any fine charged in case of failure to return the books within due time?

A. Yes a fine of Rs. 10.00 per day per book will be charged after due date.

Q. Can you borrow library material if you have a fine against your name?

A. UMT library gives you relaxation in borrowing upto a fine limit of 1000 rupees. After crossing this limit your membership is automatically suspended till the submission of fine.

Q. What would be compensation if any library material has been lost by the library user?

A. He / She has to compensate in the following way:

  • If library material is available (in the same format) in the local market, he / she has to pay the market price of the item along with rupees one hundred processing charges
  • He / She may purchase it on fine or pay that price along with shipment charges and taxes.
  • In case of non-availability of material, he / she has to pay three times the current price.

Q. If the same edition / version of the item is not available?

A. One can submit the latest edition/ version if the same is unavailable in the market or out of print.

Q. Who is allowed to use the Inter Library Loan?

A. All faculty, staff or students at UMT are allowed to avail the facility of inter library loan.

Q. How can I avail the facility the Inter Library Loan?

A. You may contact library Help Desk for further details of ILL facility.

Q. A book is currently checked out, can I request it through the Inter Library Loan?

A. The library will try to bring back the issued item however long overdue item can be requested through interlibrary loan.

Q. Is photocopy facility available at the UMT library?

A. Yes, the photocopy facility is available in the library within copyright provisions.
